In the wake of the 9-11 attacks, the Myrtle Beach tourism community hosted countless first responders to provide them a respite from the work of restoring Ground Zero, and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday launched a Memorial Golf Outing, forging a relationship with the FDNY and its membership that continues to this day.
The golf event, now known as the Myrtle Beach Never Forgets Memorial Golf Outing, has attracted more than 7,000 firefighters to the area to spend time and celebrate the brotherhood they share.
As a show of appreciation for the hospitality provided to first responders by the Myrtle Beach tourism community, a piece of steel ribbon beam from the fallen North Tower of the World Trade Center was presented to Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday in May 2011, culminating in the construction of the Myrtle Beach 9-11 Unity Memorial.
The memorial was unveiled during a moving ceremony on September 11, 2012 and is located on the 29th Avenue side of Broadway at the Beach. The memorial, which showcases the North Trade Tower beam, is open to the public.
